"Peace, Like Charity, Begins At Home."

-Franklin Deleno Roosevelt

Franklin D. Rooselvelt was born in the year of 1882 in New York.  He married Eleanor Rooselvelt, who was his distant cousin, in 1905.  F.D.R became a member of the US Senate in 1910.  Through his life, he had always admired his cousin, Teddy Rooselvelt, who was our 26th  president.   In August 1921, FDR was diagnosed with polio.  He was 39 years old.

Two major historical events for the US happened when Franklin was president.  The first was the Great Depression.  This happened because the US stock markets crashed.  People became desperately poor.   Franklin brought the US out of it by making things like Social Security and the Civilian Conservation Corps.  The other historical event that happened when he was president did not just concern the US. It was World War II.   Adolf Hitler was taking over Europe. As you can imagine, there was a great struggle for peace at the time. This is when he said this quote. I like this quote a lot because it suggests that the way to get something big, like peace, is to start very small.  So if you want peace, start by getting along better with your family and friends, then expand.

Robin Gurdak-Foley:I admire FDR, also. I wish I could have met him. He must have been very wise to have been elected 4 times! You did a nice job writing about him.
Alice  Walker:I really liked this piece. It explains his peace reference well. Good Job!
Mrs. Luce:Nice job, Isabel! I like your own comments regarding FDR's words at the end. He was a beloved president. You might want to check and edit the spelling of his name.
