"I believe that peace is not merely an absence of war but the nurture of human life, and that in time this nurture would do away with war as a natural process"

Jane Addams was born in  September 6, 1860.  That was before Abraham Lincoln was the president.   After he became president, the civil war started.  Jane Addams saw people getting killed and began to work  for people that needed help.  Then she started working for peace  strongly.  People began to know her name.  When she grew up she said a lot of important things for peace.  Because of that, she got elected president of the WILPF.  WILPF stands for Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.  She also became the owner of Hull House.  Hull House is a place for underserved families and people.  Jane Addams helped them be full perticipents of their community.

Jane Addams won the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10, 1931 when she was going to another hospital because she was ill from a heart attack.  She got the award because she gave her whole life for peace in the world.   But three years later she died because she had an operation for an unsuspected cancer.  Every one in Hull House and other people came to her funeral.  She was important to people because she helped people that needed help and changed how people thought about peace.
