Mikhail Gorbachev was born in 1931, in Privlnoye Stavropol Provinence and went to Moscow State University.   When he was 21, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and got promoted to the Communist Party.  From 1950 to 1955, he studied law on a state scholarship at Moscow State University.  While he was there, he met his wife, Raisa Maksimovna, nee Titarenko.  In 1953, they got married and their daughter was born in 1957.  Gorbachev made his first job ranking the union of young communists. 

    Gorbachev realized the people in Russia were living lives that were definately not the best, but they were still recovering from World War II.  At the end of December 1991, Gorbachev retired as leader of the U.S.S.R.  He was the last head of the state of the USSR.  Although he was an important leader in the U.S.S.R,  his downfall led to the collapse of it.  In Russia,  the government controled everything, meaning  the people had no power, and disagreeing with the government would lead to a bad fate .  Mr.Gorbachev broke the government apart  and started Perestoika, which means restructuring.  The effect of the government getting torn apart meant the Russians got so much more freedom, choice and power over themselves.  That was a huge part in Russian history.
