"The value of our shared reward will and must be measured by the joyful peace which will triumph, because the common humanity that bonds both black and white into one human race, will have said to each one of us that we shall all live like the children of paradise. Thus we shall live, because we will have created a society which recognizes that all people are born equal, with each entitled in equal measure to life, liberty, prosperity, human rights and good governance. Such a society should never allow again that there should be prisoners of conscience nor that any person's human rights should be violated."
-- Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa, on July 18, 1918. He joined the ANC (African National Congress) in 1944, to help fight segregation. In 1963, he was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. In 1964, he was brought to a trial and accused of planning to overthrow the government by violence. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with eight others. On Febuary 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela was released. After getting out of jail, he did a lot of peace work. For his efforts in fighting segregation with the ANC to make things more equal for the blacks, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. In 1994, he became South Africa's first black President.
Nelson Mandela said this quote because there were laws limiting South Africa's blacks. He joined the ANC for this reason. Nelson Mandela fought segregation for all of his life. He wanted everybody to be able to do the same things. He wanted everybody to be equal.
